21st Bells Run attracts 800 runners
On a cold, frosty and slightly foggy October morning followed by bright sunshine, the 21st Bells Run took place in the beautiful surrounding countryside of the picturesque Staffordshire village of Pattingham. At 11.00am on Sunday 17th October 2010 saw the start of the Pattingham Bells Run, the popular multi-terrain event now in its 21st year. With nearly 800 runners taking part, the run continues to be a successful and recognised event in the running calendar. The Junior Race, introduced in 2009 continues to grow in runners entering and is seen as a future expansion of the Bells Run day.
Tony Ainsworth, the Race Director commented on the smooth running of the race and praised all the many helpers from the village. "Without the help of those registering runners, providing drinks, ringing the church bells, marshalling the course, the start, the finish, the car parks, making and cutting the fruit cake, sorting the results and many, many more tasks, this race would not be the tremendous success that it is. Thanks to everyone. We also thank all the runners for taking part. Without their dedication and commitment, we wouldn't have a race."
All runners receive a Bells Run brass which this year carried the '21' design theme, including this year's winner, David Evans No. 164 from Finchfield, Wolverhampton and a member of Wolverhampton and Bilston Althetics Club, who completed the course in 40 minutes, 32 seconds. Well done, David.
The winning lady was Tess Parkinson No 1074 from Wednesfield and a member of the same club as the winner. She completed the course in 50 minutes, 10 seconds. Congratulations, Tess.Full details of the race and next years date, together with some results and race pictures can be seen on the church website at www.pattingham-church.org. For full detailed results, visit the Bell Ringers website at www.pattingham-ringers.org.uk
Full results will be available on the Bellringers website at www.pattingham-ringers.org.uk
Next year's Bells Run and Junior Race will take place on the 16th October 2011.

What runners think of the Bells Run... From : Maurice Talbot
Hi MikeCongratulations to everyone involved in the organisation of the run, my daughter and I take part in races throughout the country, this is by far the best organised with a great friendly atmosphere.
Well done!
Best regards

Hi Mike
Thanks to you and all the race organisers for a fantastic day. It's the first time I have ever run the Bells of Pattingham and I really enjoyed it. The excellent weather helped of course. As did the fact that both race winners came from our club!
Best wishes,
Gwyn James - Wolverhampton & Bilston AC
From: Tess Parkinson (Ladies Winner)
It was a hard slog because I had run the previous day in the National Road Relay.
From: Matthew Watkins
It was worth the 720 mile round trip from Lochgilpheadin, Argyll to be here. I like running and the marvellous rolling couuntryside of this course was totally different to the hills of Scotland.
From: Roger SouthallI have competed in all the 21 of the Pattingham Bells Runs. At 57, it gets harder every year and each time I finish I swear that I will never do it again.
From: Clive Wycherley
It is the first time I have run together with my wife, Chris and my two sons, Karl and Hal, it was a lovely family day out.
From: Dave Meageen
It was absolutely fab....we are all new to running and this was our second event after the Kinver 10k. We will be back next year...thanks very much
Dave

Thank you to all those who helped with this year's race...
Once again, thanks to all those who helped with the event. Around 150 people assist in marshalling the race and village traffic, manning the Help Desk and taking 'on-the-day' registrations. Thanks also go the Pattingham Bell Ringers and the band of ladies who prepare and serve the hundreds of pieces of harvest cake with a hot cup of tea. Thanks also to the farmers for their cooperation on the actual course.
Publicity...
Thanks also go to all the publications and radio stations that took up our Press Releases and published details of this year's run. We would particularly like to mention Wolverhampton Chronicle, Staffordshire Journal, The Villager, Express & Star and Pattingham Parish magazine.
Raynet (communications), the Red Cross and the Community Paramedics were again on duty and we thank them for their attendance which ensures the welfare of all runners taking part in the run.
As previous years, donations will be made to various local charities including the Air Ambulance plus the Village School, the Village Playing Fields Association, Raynet and the Air Cadets, who provide our car parking attendants. Remaining proceeds from the Bells Run are given to St. Chad's Church, Pattingham.
Next year's Bells Run takes place on Sunday 16th October 2011
The 22nd Bells of Pattingham Run will take place on Sunday 16th October 2011, starting at 11.00 am from the Village Hall Playingfields. The first run back in 1990, was organised to raise money to replace the old wooden bell frame in the belfry of St. Chad's church in Pattingham. Because of its popularity, the run has continued over the years and now is a respected event in the running world with a limit of 1000 entries.
All proceeds from the race are now used for local charities, such as the County Air Ambulance, Air Training Corps, Playing Fields Committee, St Chad's School and also to help St. Chad's Church funds. All runners finishing receive a 'Bells Run' brass and the first runner from the Parish of Pattingham with Patshull will be presented with a cup to be held for one year.
The design for the Bells Run brass is changed each year and they have become collector's pieces. The picture shows a typical design for the race.
The run starts and finishes in Pattingham in South Staffordshire over a 7 mile off-road, multi-terrain course, under UKA rules. Costs to enter by pre-booking, or entering on the day, will be posted on this website in the future.
