Despite the rain, 24th Pattingham Bells Run attracted 472 runners...
Although
it was raining, this failed to dampen spirits at the 24th annual
Bells of Pattingham Run, which saw entrants set off on a seven-mile
course from the village playing fields.
A total of 472 runners aged between 17 and 85 braved wet weather
conditions as they followed the multi-terrain course across tracks
and fields.
Race director Tony Ainsworth hailed the event a huge success,
with nearly £3,000 raised for charities that have yet to
be chosen - smashing last year's total of just over £2500.
Mr Ainsworth said: "We're extremely pleased. It's better
than we were expecting.
"The rain obviously was a little bit unfortunate - it was
the first time it has been wet like that for a very long time
- but in all I think everybody was happy.
He added: "I'd like to thank everybody who took part and
also the local farmers and gamekeepers for allowing us to use
their land.
"Let's look forward to the 25th race next year.
"It is quite a serious run, so next year we are going to
try to make it more of a family event to encourage a broader
participation."
The run dates back to 1990, when it was organised to raise money
to replace the old wooden bell frame in the belfry of St Chad's
Church. The church's bells are sounded throughout.
This year's overall winner was Ross Jones, 33, from Fordhouses,
who is a member of Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club.
He crossed the finish line after 40 minutes and 48 seconds. The
fastest female was Tessa Clarke, 25, who runs with the same club
and lives in Bilston, with a time of 47 minutes and 54 seconds.
The winners in the categories for fastest male and fastest female
from Pattingham and Patshull were Alan Griffiths, 52, and Amanda
Swannick.
Their respective times were 52 minutes and 58 seconds and one
hour, four minutes and 58 seconds.
Prizes were also given out for various age categories, presented
by St Chad's Church Priest, Revd Preb Maureen Hobbs.

Thank
you to all those who helped with this year's race...
Once
again, thanks to all those who helped with the event. Around
150 people assist in marshalling the race and village traffic,
manning the Help Desk and taking 'on-the-day' registrations.
Thanks also go the Pattingham Bell Ringers and the band of ladies
who prepare and serve the hundreds of pieces of harvest cake
with a hot cup of tea. Thanks also to the farmers for their cooperation
on the actual course.
Publicity...
Thanks also go to all the publications and radio stations that
took up our Press Releases and published details of this year's
run. We would particularly like to mention Wolverhampton Chronicle,
Staffordshire Journal, The Villager, Express & Star and Pattingham
Parish magazine.
Raynet (communications), the Red Cross and the Community Paramedics
were again on duty and we thank them for their attendance which
ensures the welfare of all runners taking part in the run.
As previous years, donations will be made to various local charities
including the Air Ambulance plus the Village School, the Village
Playing Fields Association and Raynet. Remaining proceeds from
the Bells Run are given to St. Chad's Church, Pattingham. |
Next year's
Bells Run takes place on Sunday 12th October 2014
The 25th Bells of Pattingham Run will take place on Sunday
12th October 2014, starting at 11.00 am from the Village Hall
Playing Fields.
The first run
back in 1990, was organised to raise money to replace the old
wooden bell frame in the belfry of St. Chad's church in Pattingham.
Because of its popularity, the run has continued over the years
and now is a respected event in the running world with a limit
of 1000 entries.
All
proceeds from the race are now used for local charities, such
as the County Air Ambulance, Playing Fields Committee, St Chad's
School and also to help St. Chad's Church funds. All runners
finishing receive a 'Bells Run' brass and the first runner from
the Parish of Pattingham with Patshull will be presented with
a cup to be held for one year.
The design
for the Bells Run brass is changed each year and they have become
collector's pieces. The picture shows a typical design for the
2012 race.
The run starts and finishes in Pattingham in South Staffordshire
over a 7 mile off-road, multi-terrain course, under UKA rules.
Costs to enter by pre-booking, or entering on the day, will be
posted on this website in the future.
