The 25th Pattingham Bells Run
gets a foggy start.
This year's Pattingham Bells Run was very special as it is the
25th. This very popular event which is a 7 mile off-road, multi-terrain
race around the beautiful countryside of South Staffordshire,
took place on Sunday 12th October 2014, starting at 11.00 am
from the Village Hall Playing fields in Pattingham. The weather
was good for the runners, being foggy and cool, but dry.
The first run
back in 1990, was organised to raise money to replace the old
wooden bell frame in the belfry of St. Chad's church in Pattingham,
near Wolverhampton. Because of its popularity, the run has continued
over the years and now is a respected event in the running world
with several hundred runners taking part.
All main race
finishers received a specially designed '25th' Bells Run Brass
to mark this unique event, together with the popular fruit cake
slice and a hot drink.
Out of a total
of 449 runners, first past the post was Ross Jones from Wolverhampton
and Bilston Athletic Club who completed the course in 39 minutes
23 seconds. He was followed by Paul Hammond from the same club
who came second with a time of 41 minutes 17 seconds. A previous
race winner, Robin Sedman-Smith came third in 41 minutes 50 seconds.
The first lady was Tessa Clarke with a time of 46 minutes 31
seconds.
All proceeds
from the race are now used for local charities, such as the West
Midlands Air Ambulance, and also to help St. Chad's church funds.
All runners finishing receive a 'Bells Run 2014' brass and the
first lady and first man runner from the Parish of Pattingham
with Patshull will be presented with a cup to be held for one
year.
The design
for the Bells Run brass is changed each year and they have become
collector's pieces.

Thank
you to all those who helped with this year's race...
Once
again, thanks to all those who helped with the event. Around
150 people assist in marshalling the race and village traffic,
manning the Help Desk and taking 'on-the-day' registrations.
Thanks also go the Pattingham Bell Ringers and the band of ladies
who prepare and serve the hundreds of pieces of harvest cake
with a hot cup of tea. Thanks also to the farmers for their cooperation
on the actual course.
Publicity...
Thanks also go to all the publications and radio stations that
took up our Press Releases and published details of this year's
run. We would particularly like to mention Wolverhampton Chronicle,
Staffordshire Journal, The Villager, Express & Star and Pattingham
Parish magazine.
Raynet (communications), the Red Cross and the Community Paramedics
were again on duty and we thank them for their attendance which
ensures the welfare of all runners taking part in the run.
As previous years, donations will be made to various local charities
including the Air Ambulance plus the Village School, the Village
Playing Fields Association and Raynet. Remaining proceeds from
the Bells Run are given to St. Chad's Church, Pattingham. |
